Researched out a new type of tungsten alloy that can withstand ultra-high radiation
It was reported on March 5 that the journal "Science Advances" recently published an article that researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States have developed a new type of tungsten alloy that can withstand ultra-high radiation. For extreme radiation environments, such as the inside of a magnetic fusion reactor, new materials that can withstand ultra-high radiation are indispensable. Previously, related materials have been struggling to develop due to their resistance to fracture. The newly developed tungsten alloy may overcome this problem.
Tungsten alloy is an alloy composed of tungsten and other elements. Among metals, tungsten has the highest melting point, high temperature strength, creep resistance, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and electron emission performance. It has a large specificity. In addition to being used in large quantities for the manufacture of cemented carbide and alloy additives, tungsten and its alloys are widely used In the electronics and electric light source industry, it is also used in the aerospace, casting, weapons and other sectors to make rocket nozzles, die-casting molds, armor-piercing bullet cores, contacts, heating elements, and heat shields.
The author of the paper, Osman El Atwani, the research chief of the project "Radiation effect and plasma material interaction in tungsten-based materials" at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States, said: "Compared with pure nanocrystalline tungsten materials and traditional alloys, the new alloy has more advantages. Excellent radiation resistance. We are studying the mechanical properties of the material under different stress states and the response under plasma irradiation."
Researcher Enrique Martinez Saez said: "This high-entropy alloy has unprecedented resistance to radiation. It can still maintain excellent mechanical properties after being irradiated. However, traditional radiation-resistant materials have mechanical properties after being irradiated. There will be a significant decline.” Project collaborator and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) materials scientist Arun Devaraj pointed out that the results of atom probe tomography showed that the elements contained in tungsten alloys have an interesting layering phenomenon at the atomic level. They will transform into nanocrystalline clusters when they are irradiated-this is the internal mechanism of their high radiation resistance.
Tungsten alloy is a tungsten-tantalum-vanadium-chromium quaternary nanocrystal prepared in the form of a thin film. Researchers have characterized the properties of alloy materials under extreme thermal conditions and after irradiation. Saez said: "We have not conducted performance tests under high corrosion conditions. But I am optimistic that it can perform well under such severe conditions. In addition, if it has excellent ductility as expected, so high Tungsten alloys with melting points can also be used as turbine materials."
